Water & Ecology Forum | Blanca E. Jiménez Cisneros:Water, science and public policy AR6 IPCC WGII
Published 09 August, 2024
Professor Blanca E. Jiménez Cisneros, an editorial board member of the W&E journal and a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, shared her insights on water resources management and climate change adaptation. She emphasized the significance of the water section in the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Professor Cisneros pointed out that water is a broad field intimately linked to energy, food, and the environment, and that strategies for water resources management and adaptation are crucial in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Additionally, she underscored the socio-cultural value of water resources and the necessity of ensuring access to clean water for all. Through her analysis of the profound impacts of climate change on water resources, including its effects on agriculture, energy production, human health, and the environment, she highlighted the escalating risks of extreme events such as floods and droughts.
Taking the extreme climate event in Acapulco, Mexico, in 2023 as an example, Professor Cisneros illustrated the consequences of lacking predictive models and called for comprehensive measures to address the complex issues arising from climate change. Finally, she outlined the challenges and risks associated with water security, necessitating the involvement of multiple government sectors in devising corresponding strategies to mitigate climate change and address social inequality.
