Biomarkers of neurodegeneration

Published 17 October, 2024

Introduction:

Neurodegenerative diseases have surged alongside the rapid growth of aging populations in many countries, creating significant social and economic challenges. Current diagnostic and treatment approaches for conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease primarily depend on clinical assessments and medical imaging, which can be subjective and may lead to misdiagnosis. This highlights the need to identify fluid biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity to enhance diagnostic processes and treatment monitoring.

A clinically useful biomarker should demonstrate strong predictive and prognostic value, be reliable and reproducible, easily accessible and cost-effective. Standardization and harmonization of testing methods and materials are essential for the widespread implementation of effective biomarkers in diagnostic laboratories. Additionally, exploring the underlying pathological mechanisms of these biomarkers may pave the way for novel therapeutic solutions.

This special issue will showcase the latest advancements in biomarker discovery, identification and evaluation, with a focus on those that hold promise for clinical translation.

Topics covered:

  • Progress in the identification and development of biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases
  • Application of biomarkers in the diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative conditions
  • The role of biomarkers in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Trends and Challenges for biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases
  • Evaluation and implementation of neurodegenerative disease biomarkers in diagnostic laboratories

The special issue welcomes submissions of review articles, full research articles and short communications that address in vitro and in vivo research studies, pre-clinical trials, and the evaluation and implementation of biomarkers in clinical laboratories related to neurodegenerative diseases.

Important Deadlines:

  • Submission deadline: 31st December 2024.

Submission Instructions:

Please read the Guide for Authors before submitting. All articles should be submitted online. Please select [Biomarkers of neurodegeneration] upon submission.
