Biorefinery and Biomanufacturing
Published 23 February, 2025
Biorefinery and biomanufacturing are rapidly advancing fields that focus on the sustainable conversion of renewable biomass and other green carbon sources into biofuels, chemicals and materials. These processes combine the principles of biotechnology, chemical engineering and environmental sustainability to create efficient, scalable production systems. By integrating innovative technologies such as synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and biocatalysis, biorefineries aim to replace fossil fuel-based manufacturing with greener alternatives.
This special issue of Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology will explore the latest developments in biorefinery and biomanufacturing, highlighting strategies for optimizing production processes, improving sustainability and scaling these technologies for industrial applications.
These will include, but not be limited to:
- Development of integrated biorefinery systems for the sustainable production of biofuels, chemicals, and materials.
- Advances in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering to optimize biomanufacturing processes.
- Utilization of renewable feedstocks, such as biomass and C1 carbon sources, in biomanufacturing.
- Innovations in biocatalysis and enzyme engineering for more efficient bioprocesses.
- Life-cycle assessments and economic models for evaluating the sustainability and scalability of biomanufacturing systems.
- Challenges and solutions for scaling up biomanufacturing processes from laboratory to industrial scale.
Please read the Guide for Authors before submitting. All articles should be submitted online; please select the special issue “Biorefinery and Biomanufacturing”.
Manuscripts will be reviewed and published on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all accepted manuscripts are published, they will be gathered together in this special issue.
