Smart Materials in Manufacturing is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal. We publish original research papers, authoritative reviews and leading opinions that drive innovation in the manufacturing and processing of advanced materials with embedded functionality. The focus is on existing and emerging manufacturing technologies that process novel materials and systems. Typically, these offer a variety of enhancements and capabilities, including, but not limited to, structural hierarchy, biomimicry, controlled phase formation, structural adaptiveness, shape memory and morphing ability, stimuli responsiveness, improved and bespoke properties for target applications, sensing and actuation. We are interested in papers that characterise these constructs and assess their ability to achieve real-world functionality.
The scope of the journal embraces the entire workflow underlying the manufacturing of active materials. Topics of interest sit at the crossroads of materials science and engineering and include:
Metals and alloys
Ceramics, glasses, polymers and textiles
Composite materials and multi-material systems
Natural and bio-based materials
Shape memory and morphing materials
Meta-materials and structures
Lattices and scaffolds
We welcome submissions that explore all aspects of these materials and structures, including:
Materials chemistry
Design optimisation
Artificial intelligence in manufacturing and materials processing
(Multi-)materials and (multi-)physics modelling
Surfaces and interfaces
Characterisation of materials and components
Interrogation of responses and signals emanating from the constructed materials
Quality assurance
Part authentication and identification strategies
Industrial uptake and logistics
