Special Issue on Monitoring, Mechanisms, Modelling, and Management of Induced Seismicity

Published 14 January, 2025

Induced seismicity has raised significant public concern and research interest over the past decade due to its increasing occurrence frequency, scale and the consequent impacts on public safety and economic viability. The risk of induced seismicity impacts a wide range of deep subsurface engineering activities, including mining production, geothermal exploitation, hydrocarbon extraction, wastewater disposal, carbon dioxide sequestration and hydrogen storage. Addressing the complex challenges posed by induced seismicity necessitates comprehensive research into its real-time monitoring, physical mechanisms, predictive modelling and risk management strategies.

This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and industry experts to discuss the latest advancements and future direction in understanding, monitoring, modelling and mitigating induced seismicity. Building on years of accumulated case studies and research, we invite submissions that advance our collective knowledge and capabilities in this field, promoting safe and sustainable subsurface engineering practices.

Contributions are particularly encouraged in the following areas of recent development: (1) case studies of recent or unique induced seismicity events offering novel insights, (2) innovative technologies for enhanced monitoring, simulation and prediction endeavours, (3) robust frameworks for effective risk assessment and management, and (4) emerging subsurface applications, including enhanced geothermal systems and carbon dioxide geological storage.
