Deliang Chen, the August Röhss Chair at the University of Gothenburg and currently the Distinguished Chair Professor at Tsinghua University, is an internationally renowned climatologist with significant achievements in the study of regional climate dynamics, atmospheric circulation, and climate change. His primary research focuses on climate and environmental changes in Eurasia, especially the Third Pole (Tibetan Plateau) region and their impacts on ecosystems and water resources.
Professor Chen is a Fellow of the International Science Council (ISC) and a member of several prestigious academies, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of Gothenburg, the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries, and is a foreign member of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters.
He has been deeply engaged in the international scientific community, particularly in Sweden and China. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Executive Director of the International Council for Science (ICSU), where he played a pivotal role in advancing global scientific leadership, coordination, and collaboration. Previously, he was the Science Director at the National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration and the Director at the Center for Atmospheric Sciences in Gothenburg, Sweden. Professor Chen has served as a scientific advisor and reviewer for various governments, intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations, and national research funding agencies. He has also contributed to the scientific steering committees and councils of renowned research centers and programs. In addition, he has judged prestigious international awards such as the Volvo Environment Prize and the Olav Thon Award and has been a member of the Project Evaluation Committee of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Japan. He has also contributed as a member of the expert group for China’s National Major Scientific Research Program on Global Change Research and the Board of the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
He has held leadership roles including Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Swedish Environment and Climate Data Centre, Chair of the Nomination Committee for the Stockholm Water Prize, and Chair of the Division of Geosciences at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
As a long-time contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he has served as a contributing author, lead author, and coordinating lead author for Working Group I in three assessment reports. He has also served as an editor for several international scientific journals.
Professor Chen has received numerous honors for his work. He was awarded the 2016 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 2017 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award by the People's Republic of China. Recently, he was listed on the @Reuters Hot List of top climate scientists worldwide and received H.M. the Swedish King’s Medal for his outstanding contributions to Swedish and international climate research.
