Special Issue on Biomass to Energy, Chemicals and Materials

Published 02 April, 2024

The special issue highlights the advances in the area of biomass conversion to energy, fuels, chemicals and materials. Biomass conversion via thermochemical technology represents innovative pathways towards harnessing its potential for energy, chemicals, and materials. Biomass pyrolysis involves thermal decomposition in the absence of oxygen, yielding bio-oils, syngas and biochar. Conversely, hydrothermal liquefaction employs moderate-high temperature and pressure in a water-rich environment to convert biomass into bio-crude. These processes offer versatile platforms for sustainable energy production, synthesis of valuable chemicals and formation of materials, contributing to a greener and more resource-efficient future.

Topics covered

  • Lignocellulosic biomass and biomass components
  • Municipal solid wastes and mixtures of plastics and biomass, recycling, management, and utilization
  • Algae and coal
  • Materials for energy conversion and storage
  • Biomass conversion technology: Pyrolyisis, gasification and Hydrothermal Liquefaction
  • Materials for environmental remediation (water/air/soil)
  • Materials for capture, storage, and chemical conversion of carbon dioxide
  • Biodegradable materials
