Dr. Mohamed R. El Tahan was born in Egypt in 1973 and graduated with an M.D. from the College of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt, in 2005. He has specialized in cardiothoracic anesthesia since 2001, beginning his training and post-doctoral practice at Mansoura University Hospitals, Egypt.
From 2007 to 2013, he served as a consultant and assistant professor in cardiothoracic anesthesia at the University of Dammam (now Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University), Saudi Arabia, where he established the cardiac anesthesia and surgery service in 2008.
Since October 2016, Dr. El Tahan has been a consultant-in-deputy professor in cardiothoracic anesthesia and surgical intensive care at Mansoura University, Egypt. He continues his role as an associate professor and consultant of cardiothoracic anesthesia at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, where he has worked since 2007.
Dr. El Tahan was appointed as a Visiting Professor at Valencia University for the Master Course "Airway Management and Thoracic Anesthesia" for the 2024-2025 academic year, starting June 2, 2022.
With a strong academic background, Dr. El Tahan has published 85 peer-reviewed scientific papers cited in PubMed and eight book chapters. He has been actively involved in the peer-review process for 14 international journals since 2007. In addition to his peer-review work, he has served as an associate editor for BMC Anesthesiology, Plos One, and Frontiers in Anesthesiology since 2017, 2018, and 2022, respectively. He is also an editor for Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and the Saudi Journal of Anaesthesia.
Dr. El Tahan's research interests focus on regional analgesia for adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, hemodynamic monitoring and control, fast-track cardiac anesthesia, airway management, lung separation, aortic surgery, thoracic anesthesia, and gender balance. He leads international multicenter research studies, including the ICARuS project (a multinational survey on using TEE for non-cardiac surgery) and an international study on gender balance among cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, both endorsed by major international societies. He is actively involved in two research groups at Mansoura University and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University.
Dr. El Tahan has been an instructor, speaker, and organizer at over 120 national and international workshops and congresses since 2005, including 21 EACTAIC webinars, 11 fellowship seminars, and four masterclasses. He has been a member of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) Board of Directors from 2017 to 2024 and has contributed to the Thoracic Committee since 2017. Additionally, he served as a delegate for the Education Committee of the Pediatric Committee from 2014 to 2017. Dr. El Tahan is also the co-founder and leader of the EACTAIC Social Networking Task Force, which has developed the association's social media platforms since 2016.
Dr. El Tahan continues to make significant contributions to the field of cardiothoracic anesthesia through his academic work, research, and leadership in professional organizations.
