Special Issue on Intermedial Representation of Historical Spaces
Published 03 April, 2025
Introduction:
Intermedial Representation explores the heterogeneous relation between different forms of meaning-making, within a particular media product or across media types including literature, painting, film, video games, performance and architecture. This relation applies to spatial studies in the broadest sense and can be viewed in a historical context.
The concept of Intermedial Representation demands the expansion of architectural history themes beyond the confines of physical structures, integrating the perspective of contemporary art to showcase the manifold spatial imaginations of diverse subjects.
Furthermore, it facilitates the application of digital and intelligent technologies within the practice of architectural heritage conservation, thereby stimulating immersive and interactive spatial experiences that engage public participation. This will, in turn, encourages local communities to combine development strategies with their traditions, enhancing the sustainability of economic growth.
We invite contributions that introduce new perspectives on intermedial research, practice and teaching in architectural history and theory. Potential topics for this special issue include, but will not be limited to:
- Rethinking Space: Intermedial Perspectives in Contemporary Architectural Theories;
- Writing Spaces: Intermediality in Architectural History;
- Space as Media: Urban Experience in the Digital Age;
- Mixed Reality: Innovative Media Technologies in Heritage Conservation;
- The Role of Matter: Alternative Approaches to Physical Construction;
