Special issue on Advances in global geothermal energy

Published 28 February, 2025

Introduction

Geothermal energy is emerging as a pivotal resource in the global transition to clean and sustainable energy systems. As an abundant, renewable, and low-carbon source, it has the potential to provide baseload power, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and contribute significantly to global decarbonization goals. Geothermal resources, ranging from low to high enthalpy, offer a diverse set of opportunities for power generation, direct use, and heat storage applications, with significant potential for both developed and developing regions.

Despite the substantial potential, challenges remain in harnessing geothermal energy efficiently, particularly in the exploration, development, and optimization of deep geothermal resources, as well as the economic and environmental sustainability of geothermal projects. The growing interest in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), the exploration of supercritical geothermal resources, and advanced drilling techniques are driving innovations in the field. The development of comprehensive geological and geophysical techniques, numerical simulations, and policy frameworks is essential to advancing geothermal technologies and ensuring their scalability.

This Special Issue seeks to highlight the latest scientific research and technological innovations in geothermal energy, focusing on a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Advances in geothermal resource exploration and characterization
  • Geothermal Drilling and Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)
  • Geothermal Reservoir Simulation and Data Analytics
  • Policy, Economic, and Regulatory Aspects of Geothermal Development

We invite contributions that offer new insights, solutions, and case studies on technological, economic, and policy challenges and opportunities related to geothermal energy development worldwide.
