Special issue on mRNA synthesis, delivery and applications

Published 28 September, 2022

Introduction:

As a result of recent scientific discoveries made in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, messenger RNA (mRNA) research and development has been thrust into the public eye as a potentially game-changing disruptive technology. The interest in mRNA is driven by three essential parameters: safety, speed and effectiveness. However, the scientific community must still overcome difficulties to make the process of producing mRNA vaccines and therapies more effective and efficient. To reach the full potential of mRNA, it is vital to focus on key areas and strategies that can aid in the elimination of bottlenecks in this increasing market segment, resulting in a paradigm-shifting development in the biopharmaceutical industry and other fields. Cooperation, open conversation and a concerted effort will be required to pave the way for the mRNA industry's bright future.

Topics covered:

These will include, but not be limited to:

  • Computational mRNA design
  • mRNA synthesis
  • DNA template preparation
  • In vitro transcription
  • mRNA degradation and stabilisation
  • mRNA capping
  • mRNA poly(A) tail
  • Unnatural mRNA modification
  • mRNA structure prediction
  • Circular mRNA
