Professor Xingdong Zhang

Sichuan University, China.

Professor Xingdong Zhang from Sichuan University is the founder and Honorary President of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials (CSBM) and the Past President of the International Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE).

Professor Zhang started his biomaterials career in 1983, focusing on the basic research and translation of bioactive materials and regenerative medicine. He invented porous calcium phosphates bioceramics that can induce bone regeneration and developed osteoinductive synthetic bone grafts and coatings, with more than 300,000 clinical cases. Based on the following studies and findings that biomaterials can induce the regeneration of cartilage, ligament, central nerve, and cardiovascular tissue, he proposed the concept of “tissue inducing biomaterial”, i.e. a biomaterial designed to induce the regeneration of damaged or missing tissues or organs without the addition of cells and/or bioactive factors. The concept was included in Definitions of Biomaterials for the Twenty-First Century.

Prof Zhang has published over 400 scientific papers, together with more than 100 patents and patent applications. He has earned numerous national and international awards including CSBM Outstanding Contribution Award, Clemson Award for Applied Research, and Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award.

He also made contributions to promoting the international collaborations of biomaterials in China and worldwide with his outstanding professional service. He served as the Chinese delegate to the International Liaison Committee of Biomaterials Societies since 1992 and participated in the creation of IUSBSE. He has initiated and organized a series of bilateral and multilateral biomaterials meetings, which include the Asian Biomaterials Congress, China-Europe Symposium on Biomaterials, China-US Workshop on Biomaterials, and notably successfully hosted the 9th World Biomaterials Congress and 2018 Consensus Conference on Definitions in Biomaterials. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Regenerative Biomaterials.
