Special Issue on Large Language Models for Social Impact (LLMSI)

Published 24 July, 2024

In recent years, the emergence of powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's GPT series, Google Bard, and Meta Llama has made significant strides across various industries. While these models have demonstrated their potential to assist humans in open-domain tasks, there is a growing need for them to be applied in various specific domains to drive social development. At the same time, LLMs’ high resource consumption, hallucinations, biases, and other issues have also raised social concerns.

This special track is dedicated to research driven by key societal questions, exploring the potential of large language models to foster social development. It focuses on LLM research that aims to positively impact current global and local social challenges while enhancing the interaction between civil society, science, and policy. Additionally, we aim to address the social concerns associated with LLMs themselves. Submissions that demonstrate multidisciplinary approaches, incorporating contributions from computer science, social sciences, and natural sciences, are strongly encouraged.

To explore these issues, we invite researchers to submit original research articles and reviews on the following topics (but not limited to):

  1. Low-CostData Collection Methods for LLMs
  2. Efficient Training Methods for LLMs
  3. Eco-Friendly Evaluation Methods for LLMs
  4. LLM for Education
  5. LLM for Medical and Health
  6. LLM for Environmental Sustainability, Energy, and Climate
  7. LLM for Low and Middle-Income Countries / Underserved Communities
  8. LLM for Social Networks and Social Media
  9. LLM for Urban Planning/ Mobility /Transportation
  10. LLM for Social Welfare, Justice, Fairness and Equality
  11. LLM for Natural Sciences, Computational Social Science and Humanities
  12. LLM for Security and Privacy
  13. LLM for Economy
  14. LLM for Judiciary
  15. LLM for Humanities and History
  16. LLM for other domains to foster social development
