Great congratulations to Prof. Yiu-Wing Mai for the Award of the 2024 Asian-Australasian Association for Composite Materials (AACM) Medal
Published 03 September, 2024
Prof. Mai has made outstanding contributions to the field, demonstrating exceptional expertise, leadership and dedication throughout his career. He is widely recognised to have made significant and lasting contributions to the fundamental understanding of the fracture behaviour of a broad range of advanced engineering materials, including fibre-reinforced composites. In recognition of his truly significant achievements and inspiring contributions, Prof. Mai has been elected Fellows of major academies worldwide, such as AM, FRS, FREng, FAA, FTSE and ForMemCAE.
Prof. Mai's research has influenced engineering practice with global impact. Some examples are the developments of asbestos-free cements using cellulose fibres (James Hardie Coy Pty Ltd), superhard machining tools coated with nanocomposites (General Motors, China), testing protocol for essential work of fracture (ESIS-TC4) and improved composites manufacturing processes, such as pultrusion, thermoforming and stitching/z-pinning (Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures).
