Introduction:Giovanni Lombardi is the director of the research Division of Experimental Biochemistry & Molecular Biology of the IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio (Milano, Italia); he is Associate Professor (Dr. Hab.) of Health Sciences at Poznań University of Physical Education (Poznań, Polska), Lecturer in Laboratory Medicine at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (Milano, Italia).
He received the B.Sc. in Medical Biotechnology in 2004, the M.Sc. in Medical Biotechnology & Molecular Medicine in 2006 and the Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2009, at Università degli Studi di Milano, Milano, Italia.
His career started in 2007, as a PhD student, at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio (formerly, IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi), one of the 51 Italian hospitals accredited at the Ministry of Health as research institution. After becoming Post-doc researcher (until 2012) and PI (until 2015), he was entrusted with the direction of the research laboratory (in 2016). He was visiting PhD student at the Laboratory in Molecular Genetics of Musculoskeletal Diseases, CHU Sainte Justine (Montreal, Canada), lecturer at the Catholic University of Sacred Hearth (Roma, Italia), and visiting scientist and then associate professor of life sciences at Gdańsk University of Physical Education and Sport (Gdańsk, Poland).
He is the head of a research group investigating in the field of endocrine functions of the musculoskeletal apparatus, biochemical and molecular markers of bone and skeletal muscle turnover in health and diseases, biology of senescence of the musculoskeletal apparatus, molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis to bone, miRNAs and non-coding RNAs functions and regulation, pre-analytical management of laboratory samples, sports physiology, endocrinology, sports recovery strategies. He is the institutional referent for the WP biomarkers within the IRCCS Network-Aging at the Italian Ministry of Health.
He currently plays the following roles: elected member of the committee on "Bone Markers" of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC), European Specialist in Laboratory Medicine (EuSPLM) at the European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Academy, coordinator of the study group on "Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolism of Bone and Muscle Tissues" of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry & Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC), deputy-chair of the working group on "Whole-Body Cryotherapy" of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), active member of the member of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Diseases of the Skeleton (SIOMMMS), active member of the Forum in Bone & Mineral Research.
Other than technical-scientific consultancies, he takes part to the expert review panel of the Polish National Science Center, and reviewer for the Slovak Academy of Science. He is associate editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology, advisory board member of the Journal of Sport Sciences, and, previously he was editorial board member of the Journal of Science in Sport & Exercise.
He was the winner of research grants from national and international entities.
He is author of 164 papers published on international peer-reviewed journals and 3 book chapters. He participated as invited speaker to over 80 international and national congresses/meetings.
