Title: Mitochondrial calcium and redox communications
Introduction
Calcium transport and redox reactions (reduction and oxidation), the source of various reactive oxygen species (ROS), are tightly controlled in the cells. Transient elevations of ionised calcium and ROS concentration are central to physiological signalling, whereas their prolonged and excessive increases cause cell injury and death. Calcium and ROS act synergistically on specific targets and control the generation and elimination of each other. They directly interact with and alter conformation and function of a range of proteins, as well as lipid membranes. In recent decades, mitochondria have emerged as central hubs in these signalling systems, and as regulators of both calcium and ROS homeostasis. This talk will focus on the mechanisms and functions of mitochondrial calcium and redox communications, with a focus on local signalling at the contacts of mitochondria with other organelles.
